New York Yankees (51-34) At LA Angels Of Anaheim (46-37), 10:05 P.m.
(Sports Network) - The New York Yankees are on quite a roll right now, but history says that a trip to Angel Stadium could stop the team's hot streak dead in its tracks. The Yankees will be attempting to end their recent struggles in the city of Anaheim when they begin a three-game series with the two-time defending American League West champion Angels tonight. New York has lost six straight series to the Angels in Anaheim and are just 5-14 at Angel Stadium over that span. That doesn't include two losses in three games there during the 2005 AL Division Series, which the Angels won in five games.
The Yankees' last series win in Anaheim came between May 18-20, 2004. The Bronx Bombers will be coming in red-hot, however, as the club has ripped off 13 wins in its last 15 contests and just put together an impressive three- game road sweep of the Minnesota Twins that culminated with Thursday's 6-4 triumph. Five New York relievers combined to throw 5 2/3 scoreless innings of relief in last night's win, while Cody Ransom and Brett Gardner each drove in two runs to help the Yankees complete a season sweep of the Twins. New York won also won all four meetings with Minnesota at Yankee Stadium back in May. "We're doing well right now, we're getting some big hits, getting guys on base and hopefully we can keep that going through the weekend," said Gardner. Jonathan Albaladejo (4-1) was credited with the win after tossing 1 2/3 hitless innings out of the bullpen and Mariano Rivera picked up his 23rd save of the year with a scoreless ninth. Alfredo Aceves struggled in his first start of the year for the Yankees, as the right-hander was reached for four runs (3 earned) before being removed after 3 1/3 innings. Yankees first baseman Mark Teixeira snapped a 23-game, 95-at-bat homerless drought with a solo blast in the fifth inning. The All-Star first baseman will be making his first appearance at Angel Stadium since leaving Anaheim to sign a free-agent contract with New York in December. Teixeira played in 54 regular-season games for Anaheim last season after being acquired from the Atlanta Braves at the trade deadline. The switch-hitting slugger hit .358 with 13 homers and 43 RBI during his brief tenure with the Angels. While Teixeira prepares for an uneasy homecoming, his team hopes the presence of Joba Chamberlain on the mound can help it reverse their recent fortunes at the Big A. While the hard-throwing right-hander has been rather inconsistent overall this season, he's been awfully tough to beat on the road, having amassed a 4-0 record and a 2.74 earned run average in seven away starts. Chamberlain's two most recent outings have come at Yankee Stadium, and neither was particularly good. He allowed three runs on nine hits in a 5 1/3-inning no-decision against Seattle on June 30, then surrendered nine hits and a pair of homers before being yanked after just 3 2/3 innings versus Toronto this past Sunday. Chamberlain was tagged for eight runs that afternoon, although only three were earned due to an error. The 23-year-old has never faced the Angels as a starter, but he's tossed three scoreless innings over two previous relief appearances against Anaheim. Chamberlain's counterpart this evening, Joe Saunders, has also had his share of struggles as of late. The Anaheim left-hander has given up 14 runs (13 earned) and walked eight in just nine innings over his past two starts, one a loss and the other a no-decision. Home runs have been a major problem for Saunders, a 2008 All-Star and 17-game winner for the Angels last season. He's served up 20 long balls in only 107 1/3 innings of work thus far, including four in only 3 2/3 innings during a road loss to Texas on June 30. The 28-year-old gave up two more against Baltimore this past Sunday and was reached for six runs (5 earned) in 5 1/3 innings in that game. Saunders is 1-1 in three career starts against the Yankees, despite recording a lackluster 7.63 ERA over that stretch. He allowed three runs through seven frames in a no-decision versus New York at Angel Stadium last August. The Angels had Thursday off to regroup from a pair of home losses to fellow AL West member Texas, which moved in front of Anaheim for first place in the division with an 8-1 rout on Wednesday. The Rangers enter tonight's play a half-game in front of the Halos for the top spot. Anaheim played without center fielder Torii Hunter (strained adductor muscle) and designated hitter Vladimir Guerrero (knee). Hunter, one of two Angels selected to this year's AL All-Star team, is unlikely to be in the lineup tonight, while Guerrero is considered questionable. Ervin Santana (1-5) had another rough start for the Angels in Wednesday's loss, as the 2008 All-Star was rocked for five runs on seven hits in just four innings. These teams faced off in Yankee Stadium back in May, with New York winning two of the three meetings.
