Spain And Germany Split Opening Davis Cup Singles

POSTED: 12:01 pm PDT July 10, 2009

(Sports Network) - Fernando Verdasco gave Spain an early lead in its Davis Cup quarterfinal tie against Germany, but Philipp Kohlschreiber was able to even it for the visitors in the second of the day's two matches.

Verdasco had his hands full against Davis Cup newcomer Andreas Beck, pulling out a 6-0, 3-6, 6-7 (4-7), 6-2, 6-1 triumph to give Spain the first point, but Kohlschreiber cruised past Tommy Robredo, 6-3, 6-4, 6-4, to square the best- of-five at one apiece.

The pivotal doubles rubber on Saturday will feature Verdasco and Feliciano Lopez against the German duo of Nicolas Kiefer and Mischa Zverev. Sunday's reverse singles are slated to pit Verdasco against Kohlschreiber and Robredo versus Beck.

Spain, the defending Davis Cup champ, is playing without injured superstar Rafael Nadal, who also missed Wimbledon because of knee problems. The Spaniards have won 15 straight home Davis Cup ties.

Germany leads the all-time Davis Cup series with Spain, 9-5, but the Spaniards have won three of the last four meetings. That includes a 4-1 victory in last year's quarterfinals in Bremen.

The winner of this quarterfinal matchup will take on the winner between Israel and Russia in September's semifinals.
