Czech Republic, Argentina Split Opening Matches At Davis Cup

(Sports Network) - The Czech Republic's Tomas Berdych and Argentina's Juan Martin del Potro each won a singles match in Friday's Davis Cup quarterfinal action.

In the first rubber, Berdych battled Argentine Juan Monaco until eventually posting a 6-4, 2-6, 2-6, 6-3, 6-2 victory. But in the second match of the day, world No.5 del Potro easily defeated Ivo Minar, 6-1, 6-3, 6-3, to knot the best-of-five matchup.

Minar took the place of Radek Stepanek, who has been bothered by a knee injury and is still on the roster for this weekend's tie.

Stepanek is actually slated to take the court for the Czechs in Saturday's doubles rubber, playing alongside Lukas Dlouhy. They are scheduled to play the Argentine tandem of del Potro and Leonardo Mayer. Berdych and del Potro are slated to open Sunday's reverse singles, with Minar and Monaco scheduled for the potential decisive match.

Argentina, which is playing without the injured David Nalbandian, is in the quarterfinals for the eighth consecutive year. It won the last meeting with the Czech Republic -- a 5-0 whitewash in the 2005 first round. The Czechs, playing as Czechoslovakia, won the other two meetings in 1987 and 1980 -- both in zonal action.

The winner of this quarterfinal matchup will meet the winner between the United States and Croatia in the semifinals in September.
