American League Game Summary - New York At LA Angels Of Anaheim

POSTED: 11:16 pm PDT July 10, 2009

(Sports Network) - Erick Aybar and Kendry Morales each hit a three-run home run as the LA Angels of Anaheim took a 10-6 win over the New York Yankees in the opener of a three-game set.

Chone Figgins went 2-for-5 with two runs scored and an RBI while Bobby Abreu had two hits, two RBI and a run scored for the Angels, who have won four of their last six games.

Joe Saunders started on the mound but lasted just five innings as he was charged with five runs on nine hits with two walks and three strikeouts. Jason Bulger (4-1) got the win for throwing a scoreless sixth inning.

The Angels have dominated the Yankees in Anaheim of late, as the team has taken 15 of the last 20 games against the Bronx Bombers in the City of Angels.

"We need to get a handle on our starting pitching," said Angels manager Mike Scioscia. "They swung the bats well. We swung them better."

Alex Rodriguez went 3-for-5 with solo home run, two RBI and two runs scored while Derek Jeter had four hits and a run scored for the Yankees, who came into Friday having won 13 of their last 15 games.

Joba Chamberlain was tagged for five runs -- four earned -- on nine hits with one walk and four strikeouts in just 4 1/3 innings of work. Mark Melancon (0-1) suffered the first loss of his career as he was charged with three runs -- two earned -- on three hits in 2 1/3 innings.

"For a starting pitcher it's repeating your mechanics and right now Joba is struggling to do that," said Yankees manager Joe Girardi. "We need him to be successful. It was a frustrating day for all of us."

Trailing by four runs in the fifth, the Angels tied the game. Figgins led off the frame with a single and stole second. After Maicer Izturis fouled out, Abreu punched a single to left to plate Figgins. Juan Rivera then reached base as Rodriguez threw the ball away and Morales followed with a home run over the center field wall to make it a 5-5 game.

Los Angeles then took the lead in the sixth. Aybar led off with a single and Figgins chased him home with a triple to right. After Izturis grounded out to the mound, Abreu's single to center gave his team a 7-5 lead.

New York got a run back in the seventh on an RBI single from Melky Cabrera to make it a 7-6 game.

Aybar, though, gave his team a comfortable lead as, with two men on base, he smoked a 1-2 pitch just over the wall in the corner of right field for a 10-6 advantage in the seventh.

Justin Speier retired the Yankees in order in the eighth, but was pulled in the ninth after giving up a leadoff single to Jeter and a two-out walk to Cabrera.

Brian Fuentes, though, got Jorge Posada to swing at a high fastball for strike three to end the game and pick up his 25th save of the season.

The Yankees jumped out to a 3-0 lead in the first inning. With runners at the corners and one out, Rodriguez doubled to center to score Jeter, and Nick Swisher followed with a two-run single.

New York made it a 4-0 game in the second as Johnny Damon's single to center scored Jose Molina, who hit a one-out single and moved to second on a single by Jeter.

The Angels got a run back in the bottom of the second as Gary Matthews' single to center plated Rivera to make it a 4-1 contest.

Rodriguez gave New York its four-run lead back in the fifth with a one-out, solo home run over the center field wall, his 15th of the season.
