Lilly Hurls Cubs Past Cardinals

POSTED: 10:09 pm PDT July 11, 2009

(Sports Network) - Ted Lilly threw eight innings of one-run ball to pick up his 100th career win and help the Chicago Cubs take a 5-2 win over the St. Louis Cardinals in the second of a four-game set at Wrigley Field.

Lilly (9-6) gave up just four hits and one walk while striking out four to improve to 6-1 at home this season.

Jeff Baker went 2-for-3 with two RBI while Ryan Theriot had two hits and scored twice for the Cubs, who snapped a three-game slide.

"Teddy's been great. He's been consistent all year," said Theriot. "That's what he's done every start. He gave us a chance to win and that's why he's going to the All-Star game. He's our most valuable player so far this year."

Ryan Ludwick and Yadier Molina each drove in a run while Brad Thompson (2-6) was tagged with five runs on five hits with three walks and three strikeouts over 4 2/3 innings of work for the Cardinals, who had won four of five coming into the game.

The Cubs jumped on top in the bottom of the first. With one out, Theriot worked a walk. After Derrek Lee flied out, Aramis Ramirez singled and Alfonso Soriano walked to load the bases. Milton Bradley was then hit by a pitch to force in a run and Baker followed with a two-run single to center for a 3-0 lead.

The Cardinals had only one walk through the first three innings, but were able to cut into their deficit in the fourth as Colby Rasmus got a leadoff single, moved to second on a balk and came home on a double from Ludwick to make it a 3-1 game.

However, Chicago added two runs to its lead in the fifth to make it a 5-1 game. With one out, Theriot singled and Lee followed with a double. Ramirez then grounded out to plate Theriot and Soriano then singled to score Lee.

The Cardinals led off the seventh with a single from Nick Stavinoha, but Molina flied out and Jarrett Hoffpauir hit into a double play to end the inning.

Lilly then threw a perfect eighth inning and Carlos Marmol came on the mound in the ninth to close the game.

"He was good," Ludwick said of Lilly. "He got out of situations where we tried to put damage on him."

Marmol got Rasmus to ground out to start the inning, but Albert Pujols singled and Ludwick walked. Chris Duncan then hit into a fielder's choice that saw Ludwick forced out at second, but Molina knocked a single to score Pujols. A wild pitch then put runners at second and third and Kevin Gregg was called out of the bullpen.

Gregg did his job as he struck out Skip Schumaker to end the game and pick up his 16th save of the season.
