Garland Helps D'Backs Reel In Marlins

POSTED: 10:12 pm PDT July 11, 2009

(Sports Network) - Jon Garland tossed eight innings of one-run ball and Miguel Montero went 2-for-4 with a two-run double, as the Arizona Diamondbacks handled the Florida Marlins, 5-1, in the third test of a four- game series at Chase Field.

Garland (5-8) gave up seven hits and fanned five to snap a six-decision losing streak. Ironically, Garland's last win came on May 19th at Florida. He had since gone 0-6 in nine starts.

"Actually no, it really wasn't, coming out of the pen, mechanically I felt like I was quick, jumping at the plate, pulling off, all kinds of sorts of things were going through my head, but with some great defense tonight, a lot of double plays, which obviously helped, when it came down to it, I made a good pitch when I needed to," said Garland when asked if it was his best stuff of the year.

Justin Upton went 4-for-4 with a triple, two runs scored and an RBI for the Diamondbacks, who have won seven of their last eight overall. Gerardo Parra added a pair of RBI for the victors.

Sean West (3-4) lasted just 4 2/3 innings, allowing five runs on nine hits with four walks and a strikeout to take the loss for the Marlins, who have dropped four of six. Jorge Cantu went 3-for-4 and drove in the only run for Florida.

"Its a diamond in the rough, its not polished, and we are asking him to compete at the major league level with just one weapon, its a fastball, he needs to work on his secondary pitches, his changeup and his curveball, and other aspects, holding runners, bunting, all kinds of stuff that he need to prepare himself, which he was doing here in the major league level, its tough to do all that and win ball games and compete at this level," said Marlins manager Fredi Gonzalez about West.

The D'Backs put a three-spot on the board in the first inning to take the early edge. Stephen Drew hit into a fielder's choice, Upton singled, and Mark Reynolds walked to load the bases with one out. Montero and Parra followed with a two-run double and an RBI groundout, respectively.

Florida put men on first and second with none out in the top of the second, but Garland struck out Cody Ross and got John Baker to ground into a double play to end the threat.

Arizona plated a run in the bottom half to build a four-run margin. With runners on first and second and two outs, Upton stroked an RBI single to right.

Cantu's RBI single in the third cut the deficit to 4-1.

The Diamondbacks put men on the corners with no outs in the fifth. After Montero flied out, Parra scored Upton when he grounded into a fielder's choice.

Garland, who retired eight straight batters at one point, shut down the Marlins offense down the stretch and Chad Qualls worked around a one-out double in the ninth to secure the victory.
