Sandoval Lifts Giants Over Pads; Cain Injured

POSTED: 10:17 pm PDT July 11, 2009

(Sports Network) - Pablo Sandoval went 2-for-3 and had a two-run homer to push the San Francisco Giants past the San Diego Padres, 2-1, in the third installment of a four-game set from AT&T Park.

Matt Cain started for the Giants but left after just 1 2/3 innings of work after getting hit on his pitching arm by a line drive off the bat of Tim Stauffer. Cain, whose x-rays were negative and had his injury diagnosed as a bruise, gave up four hits and fanned two in his brief time on the mound.

"He (Cain) had numbness, that's a pretty good shot he took," said Giants manager Bruce Bochy. "He wanted to stay out there...there was no way he was staying out there."

Justin Miller (2-1) came on in relief and threw 3 1/3 innings to get the win, the Giants' ninth in a row as the host in this series. Brian Wilson recorded the final four outs in order to notch his 23rd save of the year.

Randy Winn went 2-for-4 and scored for the Giants, who were coming off Jonathan Sanchez's no-hitter on Friday night. It was the first no-no since 1976 for the Giants, who have won the first three games of this series and have suffered just two losses in their last nine tries.

Stauffer (0-1), making his first start of 2009, went seven innings and gave up two runs on four hits to get the loss. He also fanned seven batters and walked just one for the Padres, who have just one win in their last 11 games.

"The first two games we didn't get much of a chance," said San Diego's Chase Headley. "Guys (against us) pitched well but sooner or later we've got to break through regardless of who's out there on the mound. We've just got to battle and find a way to break through and get a couple of more chances than we're getting."

Nursing a 2-1 lead in the ninth, Wilson was on the mound trying to close it out for San Francisco. Leadoff man Headley flied out to left, Will Venable went down swinging and Edgar Gonzalez followed suit to end the game.

"They (bullpen) held it down for us," said Bochy. "You can't win games without a good bullpen. We needed pitching on our side and we got it."

The Giants got on the board with a pair of runs in the fourth inning. Winn clubbed a one-out single and crossed home as Sandoval followed with a homer to left field.

The Padres managed to cut their deficit in half in the eighth inning. Everth Cabrera had a one-out double and Jeremy Affeldt was called on in relief of Sergio Romo. Cabrera then stole third and came home on catcher Eli Whiteside's errant throw.

Game Notes

Stauffer, the Portland, Maine native, was the fourth overall pick of the 2003 draft and reached the majors with the Padres for 15 appearances in 2005. He was back for one game in 2006 and two more in 2007 and racked up an overall mark of 4-7 with a 6.37 earned run average in 94 2/3 innings prior to Saturday.
