American League Game Summary - Toronto At Baltimore

POSTED: 2:28 pm PDT October 4, 2009

(Sports Network) - Brandon League was charged with a throwing error on consecutive sacrifice bunts in the 11th inning, with the latter allowing the winning run to score, as the Baltimore Orioles closed out the season with a 5-4 victory over the Toronto Blue Jays.

Nick Markakis had a two-run homer for the Orioles (64-98), who finished the 2009 campaign with a four-game winning streak on the heels of a 13-game skid. Justin Turner also knocked in a pair of runs for Baltimore, which swept this three-game set.

Baltimore starter Jeremy Guthrie lasted 7 2/3 innings and gave up four runs on nine hits in a no-decision. Matt Albers (3-6) picked up the win after throwing a perfect 11th.

Jose Bautista and Edwin Encarnacion both had two hits, including a solo homer, for the Blue Jays (75-87). Travis Snider and John McDonald also knocked in a run each in the setback.

Ricky Romero also got a no-decision in the start for Toronto as he went seven innings and gave up four runs on five hits with eight strikeouts to three walks. League (3-6) took the loss after failing to record an out in the decisive 11th.

With the game tied at four, the O's threatened in the eighth inning off Jesse Carlson to no avail. Matt Wieters led off with a walk and Markakis followed with a single. Turner, Luke Scott and Michael Aubrey were all retired in order to end the threat.

League was on the mound in the home 11th, and gave up a leadoff single to Aubrey. Lou Montanez then offered a sac bunt and reached first on League's first throwing gaffe. Jeff Fiorentino then followed suit with another bunt, and League again had a miscue on the throw which allowed Aubrey to cross home with the winning run.

The Blue Jays got on the board in the first, as Encarnacion's two-out solo homer made it 1-0. Markakis' two-run blast in the home portion gave Baltimore the edge.

Snider had an RBI double in the fourth and Bautista stroked a leadoff homer in the fifth to make it 3-2 in favor of the Jays.

The O's took a 4-3 lead in the sixth on Turner's pinch-hit, two-run single. However, McDonald's leadoff homer in the seventh knotted it up.

Game Notes:

Guthrie last won on September 6 against Texas...The Orioles avoided their first 100-loss campaign since 1988...Toronto went 9-9 against the O's this season.
