The Baseball Column: Junior, Come Back

Advice for Griffey
In the 1990s, Ken Griffey Jr. was the Golden Child, the most marketable and exciting player in baseball. Since pouting his way out of Seattle in 2000, his once glittery shine has been tarnished. Various injuries cost Griffey roughly 350 games from 2001 to 2005 and another 26 games in this season. Yet he has nonchalantly brushed aside any talk of a position switch that would move him from the physically demanding center field spot. The best thing the 36-year-old could do is not play a position at all. With more than 540 home runs in the bank, Griffey should return to the American League and become a DH. If that were to happen, he could still make the run at Hank Aaron's 755 that many of us thought he would back in the good old days.

Real Men Do Cry
Frank Robinson, the tough-as-nails Hall of Famer, showed his sensitive side on May 25 when he broke down into tears while discussing his removal of third-string catcher Matthew LeCroy during the 7th inning. After watching the Astros steal seven bases, the most in four years, Robinson pulled the former Twin immediately following his second error.

"I feel for him," the Nationals manager said. "And I hope the fans understand. And I just appreciate him hanging in there as long as he did."

LeCroy, to his credit, handled the situation with humility and class, "If my daddy was managing this team, I'm sure he would have done the same thing," he commented.

Farewell Rickey?
It seems that Rickey Henderson has finally retired after 30 professional seasons, 25 in the big leagues. The all-time leader in runs, stolen bases and lead-off home runs reportedly has the option of returning to the San Diego Surf Dawgs of the independent Golden Baseball League, but the San Diego Union-Tribune calls that "unlikely." Let's hope that Henderson, who becomes Hall of Fame eligible in 2009, returns to the majors as a coach in the near future. The game is always more fun with Rickey around.
