BAKERSFIELD, Calif. - Blaze pitcher Carlos Contreras helped a pitching staff which entered Monday night's affair against Inland Empire with a team ERA over 10.
However, Contreras allowed only two hits and struck out eight in six shutout innings of the Blaze 5-1 win over Inland Empire Monday night at Sam Lynn Ballpark.
The victory was just the second for the Blaze in their first 12 outings.
The Blaze trailed, 1-0, in the fourth when Juan Silverio walked and was driven to third on a Juan Duran single to right field.
The next batter, Kyle Waldrop, grounded out to first but Silverio crossed the plate to tie things at one.
Next up was Yorman Rodguez and he parked his second homer of the season over the wall in center field. The two-run homer put the Blaze up 3-1 on their way to the decisive win amid high winds late in the ballgame.
