BAKERSFIELD, Calif. - It may have been a little later than he preferred, but Fresno State safety Phillip Thomas got the call of his life on Saturday when the Washington Redskins drafted Thomas in the 4th round with the 119th overall pick.
Thomas was projected by some to be a third round pick, however, he had to wait two days later to hear his name called.
The former Bakersfield High standout will join head coach Mike Shanahan's team following a playoff appearance this past season under the dynamic leadership of rookie quarterback Robert Griffin III.
In addition, Thomas becomes the first player from Bakersfield drafted into the NFL since former West High star Ryan Matthews was chosen by the San Diego Chargers in 2010 with the 12th overall pick.
