BAKERSFIELD, Calif. -
23FNL was at Centennial for this Southwest Yosemite League matchup. The Golden Hawks left victorious 28-6 and clinched a playoff berth. Assitant coach Dave Rice sat in for Kevin Sneed for a coach's interview with Ccasey Keirnan in the second segment. Casey takes you through the rest of Kern County's 11-man leagues as a football Friday full of upsets took place in week 8.
On the football field things went pretty much as planned for the Golden Hawks. After a hefty loss to the Stockdale Mustangs -- a loss that stopped the momentum of a surging Centennial team -- the Golden Hawks needed a home win against Independence to get back on track and clinch a playoff berth.
They did just that.
An early Independence touchdown off a turnover was quickly erased when Centennial sophomore running back Brandon Jones broke off a run that spanned nearly the length of the field for a touchdown. The Falcons' initial score included a blocked PAT so they were held to 6 on the scoring drive. The go-ahead touchdown was a 1-yard quarterback-keeper executed by Andrew Hansen. After that the rout was on.
Rice expressed the celebratory nature on the Golden Hawks' sideline after the win.
"I told coach Sneed, 'well, we're in the playoffs.'"
Centennial is in the playoffs but still has a small mountain to climb to improve their seeding. The Golden Hawks still have BHS and Liberty left on the schedule.
