The NHL has canceled 82 regular-season games through Oct. 24 due to a lockout, the organization announced Thursday.

A post on NHL.com said, "The cancellation was necessary because of the absence of a Collective Bargaining Agreement between the NHL Players' Association and the NHL."

The 2012-13 regular season had been scheduled to open Oct. 11.

ESPN.com reported the league and players' association broke off talks Tuesday after only two hours.

The lockout began Sept. 16 over economic issues.
