KITZBUEHEL, Austria (AP) -

The Austrian ski federation says Marlies Schild might recover in time from knee surgery to defend her slalom title at next month's world championships.

Schild was initially ruled out for three months after hurting her right knee in training for a World Cup slalom in Are, Sweden, in December.

However, the federation's Alpine sport director, Hans Pum, says Schild has resumed training on skis sooner than expected and "could make the impossible happen."

The women's slalom, scheduled for Feb. 16, is the second-to-last event at worlds in Schladming, Austria.
