ELMONT, N.Y. - While there is a lot of chatter going on at Belmont Park this week about California Chrome and the likeliness he will win the Belmont Stakes on Saturday, there are also several horses willing to give the Triple Crown contender a run for the money.
Tonalist is one of those contenders. He is trained by Christophe Clement. The colt has only raced four times in his career and won the Peter Pan Stakes G-2 on May 10th after skipping the Kentucky Derby. He finished in front of Belmont contender Commissioner.
The colt looked good today at the stables. Tonalist was not able to participate in some of the major Kentucky Derby prep races this season due to a lung infection.
One thing that stands out for me with this colt is the major jockey switch up. Jockey Joel Rosario has given up his mount on Ride On Curlin to stay with this horse. He has not been a subject of any of the Triple Crown races which brings him to the starting gates fresh, but with experience on this track.
Tonalist earned a very impressive speed rating in the Peter Pan Stakes, and if the number is accurate he could be a major contender for the Belmont and go off at a higher price than currently listed.
Tonalist's last workout was on May, 31st, at five furlongs in 1:00:11.
