Szavay Moves On, Schnyder Waits In Rainy Hungary

POSTED: 11:41 am PDT July 10, 2009

(Sports Network) - Hungarian native Agnes Szavay advanced to the semifinals of the GDF Suez Grand Prix tennis tournament in her home country, while top-seeded Patty Schnyder of Switzerland will have to wait to finish her quarterfinal on Saturday after rain halted play on the outdoor clay courts Friday.

Szavay, the fourth seed, blitzed Swiss qualifier Timea Bacsinszky, 6-2, 6-3 on Friday and will next face sixth-seeded Alona Bondarenko in the semifinals. The Ukrainian also moved on in straight sets with a 7-5, 6-1 triumph over Israel's Shahar Peer.

Schnyder was ahead 4-3 in the first set against fifth-seeded Russian Alisa Kleybanova when rain stopped play. They'll finish the quarterfinal match on Saturday before the semifinal round.

The winner will take on Romania's Edina Gallovits, a 6-3, 7-6 (8-6) winner over Croatian qualifier Petra Martic.

The 2009 Budapest champion will collect $37,000.
