Martinez Sanchez Crashes Party, Captures Bastad Crown

POSTED: 11:22 am PDT July 11, 2009

(Sports Network) - Maria Jose Martinez Sanchez of Spain spoiled Caroline Wozniacki's 19th birthday, besting the Denmark native in the final at the Swedish Open on Saturday.

Martinez Sanchez defeated Wozniacki, the top seed, 7-5, 6-4 to claim her second career WTA singles title. Her maiden triumph occurred back in February when she upended Argentina's Gisela Dulko in the Bogota final.

"I'm very happy about my win today and how I played," Martinez Sanchez said. "It was really windy but I think that helped me, because I like to serve and volley and Caroline played more from the baseline. I'm really proud I was able to beat the No. 9 player in the world. It was a great week for me."

Wozniacki, an emerging talent in women's tennis, was seeking her sixth career singles crown. She won titles earlier this year at Ponte Vedra Beach and Eastbourne, while also losing in title matches at Memphis, Charleston and Madrid.

Martinez Sanchez took home $37,000.
