Czechs Creep Ahead Of Argentina In Davis Cup

POSTED: 8:21 am PDT July 11, 2009

(Sports Network) - The tandem of Radek Stepanek and Tomas Berdych lifted the Czech Republic to a victory in the doubles rubber in Saturday's Davis Cup quarterfinal action.

The duo overpowered the Argentine combination of Leonardo Mayor and Jose Acasuso 6-1, 6-4, 6-3 to give the Czechs a 2-1 lead in the best-of-five matchup.

Berdych improved his record in Davis Cup doubles to a perfect 7-0.

Juan Martin del Potro and Berdych are slated to open Sunday's reverse singles, with Berdych's teammates, Ivo Minar and Juan Monaco, scheduled for the potential decisive match.

Argentina, which is playing without the injured David Nalbandian, is in the quarterfinals for the eighth consecutive year. It won the last meeting with the Czech Republic -- a 5-0 whitewash in the 2005 first round. The Czechs, playing as Czechoslovakia, won the other two meetings in 1987 and 1980 -- both in zonal action.

The winner of this quarterfinal matchup will meet the winner between the United States and Croatia in the semifinals in September.
