Bryan Brothers Give USA Life In Davis Cup

POSTED: 8:58 am PDT July 11, 2009

(Sports Network) - Behind a dominant performance from the Bryan brothers, Bob and Mike, the United States staved off elimination in quarterfinal action of the Davis Cup against Croatia.

Ivo Karlovic and Marin Cilic gutted out five-set wins Friday, as Croatia took a 2-0 lead. However, the Bryan brothers kept the United States' hopes for victory in the best-of-five tie alive with a convincing 6-3, 6-1, 6-3 victory over the tandem of Lovro Zovko and Roko Karanusic in the doubles rubber.

The siblings are now 17-2 in Davis Cup play.

James Blake will look to carry the momentum into Sunday's reverse singles rubber with Croatian Marin Cilic. American Mardy Fish, who was a late addition after Wimbledon runner-up Andy Roddick pulled out because of a hip injury, is scheduled to face the hard-serving Ivo Karlovic in the potential decisive match.

This is the third meeting between the United States and Croatia, which leads the all-time series 2-0. The Croats topped the U.S., 3-2, in their last meeting, a first-round tilt in Carson, California four years ago. Croatia also beat the U.S. in the 2003 World Group first round, and is the only country the United States has not beaten.

The USA-Croatia winner will face either Argentina or the Czech Republic in the semifinals in September.
