Bartoli, Stosur Among Day-1 Winners In Bali

POSTED: 8:05 am PST November 4, 2009

(Sports Network) - Top seeds Marion Bartoli and Samantha Stosur were among Wednesday's round-robin winners at the $600,000 Tournament of Champions tennis event.

Bartoli (1-0) handled 11th-seeded Slovakian Magdalena Rybarikova 6-4, 6-4, while Stosur (1-0) held off ninth-seeded Hungarian Agnes Szavay 6-2, 3-6, 6-1 on the indoor hardcourts at the Bali International Convention Centre.

Meanwhile, third-seeded Belgian Yanina Wickmayer (1-0) got past 12th-seeded Japanese veteran Kimiko Date Krumm 7-6 (7-5), 6-3 and 10th-seeded Frenchwoman Aravane Rezai (1-0) upset fourth-seeded German Sabine Lisicki 1-6, 6-3, 6-4.

Thursday's round-robin matches will pit fifth-seeded Spaniard Anabel Medina Garrigues against Date Krumm (0-1) , sixth-seeded Spaniard Maria Jose Martinez Sanchez versus Szavay (0-1), seventh-seeded Israeli Shahar Peer against Rybarikova (0-1) and eighth-seeded Hungarian Melinda Czink versus Rezai.

This week's five-day competition is a 12-woman round-robin affair, featuring four groups of three players. The field is comprised of the highest-ranked 10 players who have won at least one international tournament during the year and who did not participate in last week's exclusive 10-player Sony Ericsson Championships in Doha, as well as two wild cards.

The A Group features Bartoli, Peer and Rybarikova, while B Group boasts Stosur, Martinez Sanchez and Szavay, C Group features Wickmayer, Medina Garrigues and Date Krumm, and D Group is made up of Lisicki (0-1), Czink and Rezai.

An undefeated winner this week would earn $200,000.
