Salmon Bake, Halibut Pizza On Menu

From a Alaska Salmon Bake restaurant in Fairbanks to the Mediterranean-style seaford of Orso Ristorante in Anchorage, there's plenty to taste at some of Alaska's best restaurants.

And some places, like the 229 Parks Restaurant and Tavern near Denali National Park, offer good food when you need it.

Here are some great places to eat in the "last frontier":

  • Moose's Tooth Pub and Pizzeria: An Anchorage favorite, the Moose's Tooth features veggie, meat and seafood (including halibut) pizzas along with award-winning homemade beers. The pizza "has a soft, light crust like Italian pizza, but the oomph of American pizza," according to a review by Frommer's. "They offer many ingenious toppings, but not just to dump on: The combinations really work."
  • Orso Ristorante: Also in Anchorage, Orso Ristorante combines Mediterranean flavors with fresh local seafood. Throughout the year, the restaurant's menu features king salmon from the Yukon River, handpicked wild Alaska mushrooms, fresh Alaskan king crab and free-range lamb from Oregon. "By far the best meal we had during our ten days in Alaska," the New York Times said in a travel review.
  • 229 Parks Restaurant and Tavern: If you get hungry on your way to Denali National Park, don't forget to stop at mile-marker 229.7 on the Parks Highway -- that's where the 229 Parks Restaurant and Tavern gets its name. It's just eight miles south of the park entrance. The restaurant is owned by year-round residents Laura and Land Cole, according to Frommer's, and its menu changes daily but can include everything from venison to salmon.
  • Alaska Salmon Bake: While you're checking out the northern lights or the El Dorado Gold Mine in Fairbanks, head to the Alaska Salmon Bake, which has been open for more than 25 years. "Your salmon, halibut and cod are direct from Alaska's icy waters, and cooked before your eyes on our wood fire pit," the restaurant's Web site says. "The salmon is basted with a special lemon, butter and brown sugar sauce. The halibut and cod is lightly breaded and then deep-fried to perfection as only our Alaskan chefs know how to do." Another specialty is prime rib cooked on an outdoor grill.
  • Glacier BrewHouse: It's back to Anchorage for more fresh Alaskan seafood, microbrewed beer and grilled meats. The Glacier BrewHouse serves it up in a lodge atmosphere. According to Frommer's, "Choose this place for a boisterous meal with quick, casual service that will get you out in time to do something else with the evening. Do reserve ahead, however, as waits can be long."
