Big Sky Lodging Bargains

Budget Rooms Can Still Have Character

Would you like to spend the night in a retrofitted train caboose? How about staying a few days on a mountaintop in a former fire lookout?

Or check into a budget motel that boasts one of the best bars in the country. Check out our suggestions for bargain lodgings that have real character.

Izaak Walton Inn, Essex
Nestled near the sweeping peaks and of Glacier National Park, Izaak Walton Inn is a historic, restored railway hotel. From cozy rooms in the main lodge to quirky retrofitted retired caboose “cabins,” there is a range of accommodation options to evoke some “wild west” nostalgia. The inn also offers family cabins with fully equipped kitchens that accommodate four people.

Grand Hotel, Big Timber
Their motto is “Serving cattlemen, cowboys, sheepherders and travelers since 1890.” The high-ceiling rooms are decorated with Western antiques. The hotel, which is listed on the National Registry of Historic Places, offers fine dining in the hotel's award-winning restaurant and more casual fare in the restored turn-of-the century saloon. Big Timber is located on the Yellowstone and Boulder rivers between Bozeman and Billings.

Sanders B & B, Helena
Helena is home to many mineral tycoon trophy mansions from the Wild West era, and the Sanders B & B is one such home. It offers seven guest rooms with elegant furnishings, comfortable beds and private baths. The proprietors, who have been running the inn for 21 years, offer afternoon refreshments in the parlor and a full-course breakfast. It is located near downtown Helena and the state capital area.

Garnet Mountain Lookout, Gallatin Canyon
Here's a deal that's hard to beat. Get one of the best views in Montana for just $30 a night! Take advantage of one of the historically steeped national forest cabins that are available for rent year-round. The Garnet Mountain Lookout is a retired fire observatory that offers sweeping views of the Gallatin and Madison ranges. There's only one catch: it's a 3.5-mile hike from your car to the lookout.

O’Haire Motor Inn, Great Falls
The O’Haire Motor Inn, located in the “Electric City” of Great Falls, offers more than reasonably priced accommodation. It is also the home of the Sip ‘N Dip Tiki Lounge, GQ Magazine’s “Top Bar In America” in 2003. With floating mermaids in a giant glass tank, an enormous drink named the “Fish Bowl,” and an elderly woman named Piano Pat who sings Johnny Cash and Guns ‘N Roses cover tunes with equal vigor, you won't want to miss it.
