Seek Affordable Adventures In South Dakota

Wild West Atmosphere, Natural Beauty Await

By Eisla Sebastian, Contributing writer

South Dakota is known nationwide for its "Wild West" atmosphere and for its natural beauty. Among the most popular natural attractions there are the mysterious and treasure laden Black Hills, and several animal exhibits. If you are looking for an adventure, then South Dakota is definitely the place to go.

Adams Homestead and Nature Preserve offers 1,500 square acres of free adventure. With 10 miles of hiking trails, numerous historical points of interest and a visitor's center, this is a great destination for families, singles and couples. Unlike other state parks, this one doesn't require a state park visitor's permit.

Bear Country U.S.A. is an animal attraction park that allows you to get up close and personal with the wildlife that makes the West so memorable. Here you will see grizzly bear cubs, bison and wolves. The admission price will cost you about what a ticket to a movie would. Plan ahead for this adventure attraction to make sure you arrive in time to see the demonstrations. If you are visiting Bear Country U.S.A. in the summer months, arrive early in the day to beat the crowds and the heat.

The Black Hills Caverns are a great place to visit if you are a rock hound. Here you will find one of the best examples of a crystal cave in the world. Some of the features include logomites, stalactites, helectites, stalagmites, calcite crystals and frost crystals. This is a great summer adventure attraction to visit as you will get out of the hot summer sun while enjoying a hike into the depths of the Earth. This attraction also features a gift shop and rock shop so you can pick up a few souvenirs before you leave the park.

Reptile Gardens is another great animal attraction site that is very affordable. Here you will get to see reptiles from around the world. From crocodiles to frilled lizards, you will find something that will get your heart pumping. You also can stop by the gift shop to pick up souvenirs to take home to show your friends.

South Dakota State Parks : Camping in South Dakota can be both exciting and affordable. Whether you want to pitch a tent, rent a teepee or hook up your RV, the South Dakota State Park system has a location for you. The cost of your camping spot will include both your park entrance fee and your camping fee. If you plan on camping at a state park during the peak tourist season, a reservation is a good idea but not required. If you will be staying at one of the less busy campgrounds, you can just show up to claim a spot on a first-come, first-served basis.
