The Weather Channel has announced it will start giving winter storms first names, much like hurricanes.

For the first time, the channel has decided to name noteworthy storms in the same fashion as the National Hurricane Center.

Officials from the Weather Channel said naming storms is a popular practice in Europe, and they hope the names will raise awareness, make it easier to discuss storms, and encourage people to start preparing earlier.

Along with the announcement, the channel released a list of names for the 2012-2013 season.

They include:

  • Athena
  • Brutus
