"For the Birds and More" on Rosedale Highway, is a bird store, a grooming facility and a boarding kennel. Sherry Parker, who owns the store, has become a hero for rescue groups.
She allows them to transport animals from the shelter to her facility and will hold them until they can come and retrieve them. Sometimes that can be a matter of weeks. She offers boarding at a reasonable price for rescues, which is an incredible help as rescues are non-profit organizations.
It also allows the animals a much needed chance of survival, as staying at the shelter often means they are exposed to disease.
Parker says her facility is especially full to the brim right now, as the situation to get the dogs out of the shelter has become desperate.
"We keep them here until such time as a transport can be arranged to wherever the rescues are."
Lorin Thomas, a local rescuer and transporter, takes in hundreds of dogs a week. She goes to the shelter on a daily basis, posts pictures of the dogs online, and coordinates with other rescue groups willing to take them in. On top of all that, she then drives most of the dogs to the rescue groups, which are located around the State.
She said the situation can be extremely frustrating because as soon as you save some pets, more get dropped off.
"Within four hours 14 animals were dumped while they were there trying to get animals out"
She says the situation is never ending.
"I always think of it like emptying the sinking boat with a Dixie cup."
For her and Parker, one of the main messages they want the public to hear is about the importance of spaying and neutering.
