California Highway Patrol helps kids with Bike Safety campaign

Officeres inspected bikes and helmtes

BAKERSFIELD, Calif. - The California Highway Patrol made a difference for Kern County residents this weekend, one tune up at a time.

In order to help prepare children for the new school year, the CHP teamed up with Bike Bakersfield, Public Health Services and other local and state agencies to get bikes ready for school.

"It's so important we come out and just spread the message of safety among local communities," said public information officer Robert Rodriguez, with the CHP. "East Bakersfield has the majority of fatalities, with most occurring east of the 99."

Trained bicycle technicians inspected bikes and helmets with the goal of educating kids about bike safety and prevent more deaths from bicycle-related accidents in Kern County.

The event was free to the public and kids were also given new helmets along with other goodies.
