BAKERSFIELD, Calif. - There's been an outpouring of support for an 85-year-old man forced from his home on Tuesday.
"I don't want to put anybody out but I'm grateful for any help I can get," said Herbert Jackson.
Yesterday County Code Compliance condemned the property because there are no utilities, and they boarded up the home.
"The home has been like this for several years, why did they have to wait for one of the hottest days of the year to remove an elderly man from his home," said neighbor Steve Marquez.
Herbert Jackson has been staying on a cot in his front yard after he was forced out of his home.
Kern County Aging And Adult Services attempted to provide Jackson with emergency housing, but Jackson refused to leave.
"This is my home and I really don't want to go anywhere else, but I will if I have to," said Jackson.
The violations began several years ago when faulty electrical wiring caused a fire.
Ever since that time Jackson has been living without electricity because the cost to repair the electrical wiring was too costly for Jackson.
Recently the water was turned off for lack of payment. Jackson is living on a fixed income and has difficulty managing his bills.
After the story aired Tuesday on 23ABC, dozens of people contacted the newsroom wanting to know how they can help.
Audrey Chavez of the of the Bakersfield AIDS Project met with Jackson today at his home and began discussing ways to bring his home up to code.
Chavez and a volunteer agreed to pay for his past due water bills.
