DA starting unit to help victims of crime in Kern County

BAKERSFIELD, Calif. - The District Attorney's office announced the opening of the new Victim Services Unit.

The new Victim Services Unit will provide victims of crime in Kern County with information about their rights in the criminal justice system.

The unit will keep victims informed about their criminal case. Victims will be given resources for the state compensation program and get referrals to community agencies.

District Attorney Lisa Green got support from the Kern County Board of Supervisors in early 2013 to provide comprehensive services to victims and witnesses county-wide.

Prior to being under the DA, the Victim/Witness Unit was overseen by the Kern County Probation Department.

The Board of Supervisors agreed to fund the DA's program with the Victim-Witness Assistance Fund administered by the California Emergency Agency.

Services are available 8 a.m. - 5 p.m., Monday through Friday at the Civic Center Justice building at 1215 Truxtun Avenue on the third floor.

More information is available at 661-868-2340.
