BAKERSFIELD, Calif. - Kern County District Attorney Lisa Green announced a conviction in a significant gang case today.
In a case prosecuted by Deputy District Attorney Cole McKnight, a Kern County jury convicted Devon Camden Mondine, 24, of first degree murder and attempted first degree murder, along with firearm use and gang charges.
Mondine was a member of the West Side Crips criminal street gang. On January 20, 2013, Mondine confronted two other members of the West Side Crips as they stood in the front yard of a house belonging to the grandmother of one of the victims.
Mondine opened fire on the two victims after engaging in a brief conversation.
After the two victims fell to the ground, Mondine stood over them and fired again as they lay on the ground.
One victim survived the attack, the other was pronounced dead after arriving at Kern Medical Center.
Mondine was taken into custody several blocks away after forcing a motorist to drive him from the scene.
Mondine will be sentenced on August 20. He faces a minimum sentence of 50 years to life in state prison.
