Marley's Mutts Dog Rescue met Hooch a couple months ago at the Kern County Animal Control. The mastiff was severely mutilated. Someone had cut out his tongue, chopped off his ears and deprived him of food.
However Hooch hasn't let his past haunt him. He's now thriving at the Marley's Mutts Ranch in Bear Valley and living a life he, one day, could have only dreamed of.
Zach Skow, of Marley's Mutts, says the transformation has been amazing.
"Anytime you've had your ears cut off and your tongue cut out, the natural assumption is that you're not going to like people."
But that assumption has turned out to be the farthest from the truth. Hooch gets along with people of all ages, as well as his furry roommates. He's even learned how to adjust to life without a tongue and can eat without any special equipment.
"I have him sit and I just take clumps of food and feed him one mouthful at a time with about a dozen pieces of kibble. It takes about ten minutes a day and he's steadily gaining weight," said Skow.
Now, the biggest obstacle is Hooch's slobber and his adorable snore!
"He snores with his eyes open so he looks like a zombie."
On a larger level, Hooch has become a celebrity in his own right and is now sharing his strength and will to survive to thousands around the web.
Skow says his tale has even inspired him.
"His injury might be shocking and grotesque but how he's dealing with it and approaching life is beautiful."
