BAKERSFIELD, Calif. - A national campaign is coming to Kern County. Organizers say a simple download on your smart phone can help save lives.
Independence Day weekend is one of the deadliest holidays for drunk driving crashes. Now, two groups hope to change things by teaming up.
Mothers Against Drunk Driving (MADD) and UBER, the transportation app service is launching UBERMADD.
The goal is to prevent drunk driving.
People using the service will be able to head home safe after a night of celebrating while also raising money for MADD.
“We have a problem here in town and it seems people aren’t just getting it. Either they don’t know the consequences on what they are doing or just ignoring it and putting lives at risk,” said George Barrientos, board member for MADD.
MADD is teaming up with UBER and launching UBERMADD, where the transportation service donates $1 for every ride taken during the Fourth of July weekend. UBER will also give $10 to MADD for every new rider.
“Now we have it where if you can just simple push a button on your phone and somebody is going to pick you up and in this case its going to be UBER that’s ready to pick you up, get you home safe and get a discount while you’re at it,” he said.
The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration estimates drunk driving crash fatalities increased by 4.6% in the U.S. from 2011 to 2012. Nearly half of fatal crashes during the 2012 July Fourth Weekend involved a drunk driver.
“This is just another great opportunity for people to make smart choices and make sure when they’re drinking, they’re not driving,” said UBER spokesperson Eva Behrend.
UBERMADD is an ongoing partnership that includes regional educational campaigns throughout the year encouraging adults to choose a safe way home after a night of drinking.
“UBER is committed to public safety and we are really committed to working with MADD on the idea that everybody should be safe and if you’re going to decide to drink we encourage you to leave your car at home,” she said.
The national campaign that includes Kern County launches at 6 a.m. July 4th and July 5th. People have to type in UBERMADD when requesting transportation on the app.
