This winter break, the Garces Rams won the annual Stockdale Roundup girl's basketball tournament.
“I've had some people tell me [the final] was the best girl's basketball game they ever saw,” head coach Tod Denison said.
The Rams' center, Celeste “C.J.” West led the them in scoring in the final game against centennial. Garces was without its center for some crucial minutes in that final game but the rest of the Rams stepped up.
“We got in a little bit of foul trouble,” Denison explained, “we got through that and the bench players really stepped up for us.”
“We really excelled in that tournament learning how to play together as a team,” West said of her teammates’ performance.
C.J. ended the final game with 18 points and 13 rebounds and was named MVP of the tournament for her dominating play. Last Summer that dominating play caught the eye of a very prestigious club team.
“Cal Sparks,” West named her U16 girl’s club, “it's down in the Long Beach area. We're ranked number two in the whole entire United States.”
“She's on the 16 and under on the USA so she's one of the elite in the nation,” Denison said of his 6’3’’ post player.
Although she is on one of the best clubs around, Garces basketball is still a priority – C.J. says she wouldn't have it any other way.
“I've been in private school all my life,” West explained, “the catholic experience is what I want and I'm happy here so, even if basketball wasn't a priority here I would still probably be here.”
For her MVP performance in the Stockdale tournament which brought the title to Garces – C.J. West earns a plaque provided by Kern Trophies and is our female athlete of the week.
