It’s that time of year where a lot of us are excited to see temperatures drop and our electricity bills do the same. It’s also the time of year that many people start thinking about the cold winter months. At Pauly Elementary School, some everyday people are working to make sure every child has something to keep them warm.

“People in need are going to be cold this winter,” Ceci Delgado, a parent at Pauly Elementary School, said.

Delgado is part of a group of parents who have been preparing for the cooler weather for weeks.

“Parents of the community wanted to use the opportunity to pay it forward,” Antonia Serrano, the Family and Community Engagement Liaison at Pauly, said.

They’re making blankets to benefit some children at the Bakersfield Homeless Center.

“We’re also putting a lot of love into this blanket,” Delgado said.

Ceci Delgado says not only does this keep everyone busy; it’s also for a great cause.

“Everyone should pitch in to make it a better world. I feel that any little that you do can make a huge difference in other lives,” Delgado said.

Serrano anticipates they’ll have more than 30 blankets by the end of November.

“It gives me chills. It’s the best thing ever knowing there are people out there who want to help others,” Serrano said.

Serrano says if you want to volunteer to help the community in some way, parent centers at your local schools are a great place to start.
