Fifty Kern County high school seniors will show off their collective all-star talents in the U.S. Army Arena Bowl IX football game at 7 p.m. on April 30 at Rabobank Arena, 1001 Truxtun Avenue in Bakersfield. Admission is $6.A free program is available with the donation of a canned food item that will be donated to local homeless shelters. The Arena Bowl Committee, made up of sports journalists and former coaches, came up with a list of worthy players.
Frontier High School Football Coach Rich Cornford will coach the West team and East Bakersfield High Football Coach Jerald Pierucci will be in charge of the East team. Honorary captains for the game will be retired Stockdale High School Athletic Director Don Ward and former Bakersfield High School and Bakersfield College standout football player Isaac McClanahan. Kern County Superintendent of Schools (KCSOS) Christine Lizardi Frazier and U.S. Army General Michael X. Garrett will make the ceremonial coin flip to decide which team will receive the opening kickoff.The Arena Bowl is sponsored by the U.S. Army, KCSOS Project 180, ESPN 1230, P.K.P. Promotions and KERO TV23. Apart from the football game, players will be taking part in mentoring Project 180 at-risk students who are enrolled in the Reach 4 Greatness after school program.Project 180s goal in sponsoring the event is to engage the selected all-star players in promoting community service and mentoring, said Project 180 Prevention Specialist Kevin Keyes. The game is the entertaining by product of their community involvement.
