New reports show a popular drink might be dangerous for your health. Not because it’s alcoholic but because of the cup it’s traditionally served in.

Moscow mules are a popular drink found all over social media. The drink is made with vodka, ginger beer and lime- and is poured into a copper mug.

“Moscow mules are most popular drinks, it’s been super popular for probably the last two years and we sell a ton of them,” said Gino Valpredo, Luigi's fourth-generation family member.

Public health officials are now warning users the mugs could be poisonous.

But-- this report does not seem to be bothering local businesses.

“I got ten texts when the article came out, talked to a bunch of people on the bar last week and everyone was still drinking them so I don’t think it’s going to have too much of an effect,” said Valpredo.

An advisory from the State of Iowa explains when copper comes in direct contact with foods that have a pH below 6.0, such as vinegar, fruit juice or wine, it could cause a food borne illness.

The report also explains this is only an issue when the interior of the mug is copper, mugs lined with other metals such as nickel or stainless steel are okay to use.

“There are so many different types of cups, like I was saying we have pure copper cups, ones that are lined, we have ones that are just straight metal so it hasn’t bothered anyone yet,” said Valpredo

You can still enjoy these refreshing drinks, just be aware of the metal used to line the mug.

It’s also important to be aware of the symptoms associated with drinking out of copper cups: abdominal pain and vomiting.
