Congressman Kevin McCarthy announced Tuesday the Department of Transportation has awarded Meadows Field Airport a grant to fund phase two of the Runway Rehabilitation Project.
"I am proud this second phase grant was awarded and that the Runway Rehabilitation Project continues to lay the groundwork for Bakersfield to be the gateway to the Central Valley," McCarthy said.
"Through this rehabilitation project, our airport will exceed safety standards and continue operating as a leading airport in the region -- a hub where we greet family and friends, send off and welcome home our sons and daughters, and grow economic activity in and around Bakersfield."
The Runway Rehabilitation Project is a three-phase project that will upgrade the Meadows Field Airport runway to accommodate air traffic in and out of Bakersfield and the Central Valley. The project totals $49 million.
Director of Airports Richard Strickland said in a news release that the grant is worth $12.5 million.
