A new Kern High School District boundary map has been approved that includes a new Latino majority district.

The Kern County Committee on School District Organization accepted the new KHSD trustee voting lines which keep all five trustees in their current seats.

The move by KHSD comes after Kern County faced a voting rights lawsuit that forced the county to change their supervisor districts to better represent Latinos.

The Dolores Huerta Foundation says KHSD's new map prioritizes incumbency and keeps the concentration of power in northwest Bakersfield among three trustees that live in the Rosedale area.

The foundation says this puts Latino trustee candidates at a disadvantage to be elected.

In the past, Dolores Huerta has said the foundation would file a lawsuit if they did not find the trustee map that was reached to be fair.

KHSD will be required by law to review their voting boundaries again in 2021 with 2020 census data.
