Blaine Hodge stepped in to protect a woman after the woman's ex-boyfriend chased her into a northwest Bakersfield Starbucks with a machete.

Both Blaine and the woman suffered from stab wounds, but friends are crediting Blaine with saving the woman's life because he distracted the attacker so the woman could hide.

Blaine was released from the hospital Wednesday and shares a first-hand account of how the events that day unfolded.

Robert Rivas, 31, has been identified by BPD as the suspect. He has been charged with multiple felonies, including two attempted murder charges.
