Switching to a plant-based diet decreases risk of cancer

Jordan Dennis is a registered dietician with Morrison healthcare at Kern Medical. Dennis says she's been living as a vegetarian for the past eight years. 
 
Dennis says anyone can make the switch to a plant-based diet, including athletes and pregnant women.
 
"I recommend starting slowly with meatless Monday and then incorporating more days into the week that are going to be plant-based", said Dennis.
 
Dennis says there are a lot of myths surrounding a plant-based diet, including how much protein you actually need.
 
"If you are getting enough calories, research shows you are probably getting enough protein", said Dennis.
 
Cost is a big factor for a lot of people who shy away from the eating plant-based but it's possible to stay within your budget.
 
"Beans are very cheap, also try to shop in season and frozen can be a great alternative", said Dennis.
 
Dennis says making the switch can have a positive impact on your health in the long run.
 
"Benefits of a plant-based diet include decreased risk of diabetes, heart disease, hypertension, obesity and certain cancers", said Dennis.
 
Kern medical holds a nutrition clinic every 1st and 3rd Wednesday of each month. The clinics are held from 8 a.m. to 12 p.m. and a referral and pre-authorization for some insurances are required.
