Tehachapi Woman Accused Of Having Relationship With 14-Year-Old

Woman, Teen Had 6-Month Relationship, Police Say

A 41-year-old Tehachapi woman was arrested Monday evening after being accused of having a relationship with a 14-year-old.

Rachel Schellenberg is being held at Kern County Jail and faces three charges stemming from a relationship police say she had with a Bear Valley Springs teenager.

On Monday night, Schellenberg turned herself in to Bear Valley Police Department after an arrest warrant was issued on April 29.

"We were searching for her, and she wasn't in the area," said Sgt. David Watts of BVPD. "We located her and made arrangements to take her into custody, and that happened here at the P.D. without incident."

According to court paperwork, the relationship between Schellenberg and the 14-year-old started in October 2010. It ended in April when a report of child molestation was filed with police.

"We became aware of this the middle of last month and acted on it quite quickly," said Watts.

Schellenberg is facing felony charges of unlawful sexual intercourse, lewd and lascivious act with a child 14 to 15 and oral copulation with a person under 16 years old.

"We're aware of how they met and how the relationship started, but it wouldn't be proper to comment on that type of detail," said Watts.

It's also unclear what she did for a living. BVPD said she did not work with children. They also said her profession shouldn't matter.

"I was asked if she worked in a profession of influence," said Watts. "My answer to that was, she's an adult and that is a position of influence, no matter what you do."

The investigation also included the execution of a search warrant at Schellenberg’s home.

Further investigation into new evidence is still ongoing, police said.

Officers with the BVPD said they interviewed both Schellenberg and the 14-year-old, and both admitted to the relationship.

Schellenberg's next court date is set for May 18.
