FedEx Truck Catches Fire On Freeway, Closes I-5

A FedEx cargo vehicle caught fire Friday afternoon, forcing the closure of I-5 northbound.

Around 1:15 p.m. on Friday, the Kern County Fire Department received a call reporting that a cargo vehicle carrying hazardous material had smoke coming from the rear trailer.

The vehicle was traveling north on Interstate 5 about a mile north of Main Drain, Sean Collins with the KCFD said.

Collins said 18 Kern County Firefighters responded and were assisted by Kern County Environmental Health Department, CHP and a private ambulance company.

When crews arrived, they said they were faced with a large FedEx cargo vehicle with white smoke coming from the rear trailer.

Fire crews were able to isolate the rear trailer from the main truck. However, they had to wait for a hazardous material clean up crew before opening the trailer.

All northbound traffic was diverted off I-5.
