Bakersfield church giving away nearly 900 Thanksgiving dinners on Wednesday

Posted

With Thanksgiving just days away, Victory Outreach is hosting a turkey giveaway event on Wednesday that will benefit close to 900 families.

What started out as a small holiday giveaway with around 50 turkeys turned into a gathering that will provide close to 600 turkeys and 200-300 grocery bags filled with Thanksgiving classics to local families.

Pastor Mike Aceves and his ministry wanted to give the community they serve something special to look forward to every holiday season.

"Sometimes... you know [with] those that are hurting, and things that are going on in the world... Every time you turn on the news something is going on. We wanted to be able to bring something to the community that brings a smile to  somebody," Aceves said.

The church's goal is to be able to provide something for everyone that shows up because this is around the time when families become very vulnerable and he is happy to be able to provide for them, he said.

"Especially in times like this at the end of the year some people lose their jobs, some people are going through things. It's not easy to put together a dinner for their families and we want people to be able to have what were going to be able to have on our table," Aceves said.

Registration begins at 5 p.m. and requires identification or driver's license as well as a proof of address.

Victory Outreach Bakersfield Church is located at 4704 New Horizon Blvd., just off Stine Road and White Lane.
