The City of Bakersfield plans to place temporary concrete barrier rail (k-rail) at B Street, just south of 24th Street on Wednesday, March 8, 2017. This will permanently prevent motor vehicle access to and from 24th Street and B Street.
The closure of B Street at 24th Street is part of the ultimate design for the 24th Street Improvement Project’s and is shown on project maps including those in the final environmental document.
Over the past couple of years, residents on B Street have reported a substantial increase in traffic and speeders and have made multiple requests to cul-de-sac their street in advance of construction, but litigation against the 24th Street Improvement Project has prevented changes to the physical environment. Injunctions placed by the Superior and Appellate Courts have been lifted. The recent denial by the State Supreme Court to place another injunction on the project has allowed work to move forward, and City officials can finally address this request by B Street residents.
Motorists will need to plan alternate routes to reach their destinations and should adjust their commute and travel times as necessary to accommodate this change.
