BAKERSFIELD, CA. — The Bakersfield City School District was honored by the National Association of Music Merchants as one of the best communities for music education.
BCSD is one of 18 California school districts to be honored with this recognition for its dedication to accessible music education for its students.
“I always tell people a music teacher at BCSD does not have to fundraise, we provide everything they need budget wise so instruction can be at a high level," Michael Stone, Bakersfield City School District.
The district invested $2.1 million into purchasing instruments and equipment for the music program in 2007.
“Its not surprising because we have a lot of support from our administration in music education. They give us good instruments and our concerts are packed," Daniel Hernandez, Cato Middle School music teacher.
Students like Reese Jensen have been practicing thr violin in BCSD schools since 3rd grade.
“It's been really great to have this experience of learning music in school because I've had great music teachers that want to support us all the way and they really help with the fact that if you're doing something wrong they can guide you to be your best," Jensen, Cato Middle School music student.
