The Bakersfield Police Department is giving the Bakersfield community safe tips for holiday shopping this year.

BPD enforces the community to keep in mind that as holiday shopping is quickly approaching, shoppers are more vulnerable to crimes, like theft, assault, and robbery.

They are giving the community these 7 safety holiday shopping tips:

1.) Be aware and alert of your surroundings at all times.

2.) When you are shopping, walk around with confidence. Thefts target individuals that don't show confidence.

3.) Trust your instincts while shopping. If something doesn't seem right, go with your gut and leave the area.

4.) Carry only things you need while shopping. Leave jewelry, extra cash and checks at home. If you must carry a purse, make sure it is small and close to your body. Men should always keep their wallets in there front pockets to avoid getting pick pocketed.

5.) Don't go shopping alone, always shop with others. The chance of being a victim drops dramatically when you are with at least one other person holiday shopping.

6.) Always be prepared while walking back and from your car.  Make sure your keys are in your hand while walking to your car. The keys can be used to defend yourself and you will not waste time trying to find them when standing outside of your vehicle.

7.) Plan out your shopping ahead of time. Make sure to park in well-lit and high activity areas close to store entrances. While shopping, keep all windows closed and doors locked. Do not leave valuables visible in your car. Put your shopping bags in the back of your trunk, instead of the back seat of your car.
