Wednesday night, Bakersfield City Council moved to install a crosswalk at 24th St. and Pine St. in a 5-1 vote.
The public turned out to comment on the widely debated topic.
Some opponents of the new crosswalk said one crosswalk is not enough.
“If we could, I would like to see us put three cross walks in and really slow down the traffic and that way we would have a community that was nicely connected between the north side and the south side,” said Terry Maxwell.
Those opponents said the traffic on the street was too fast to support only one crosswalk.
Meanwhile, some residents are excited for the convenience the crosswalk will bring.
“My parents live just on the other side, just six houses away. And we are forced to drive to their house. So having a safe crosswalk, we can walk over to their house, and to the neighborhood shops, and to the neighborhood restaurants,” said Katie Brewer.
