A viewer called into 23ABC News saying a construction crew hit a gas line near Belle Terrace Avenue in Southwest Bakersfield prompting evacuations.

The gas line was hit at about 12:30 p.m. Friday at an apartment complex.

The viewer who called lives in the 3300 block of LaVerne Avenue and said he was evacuated after the gas line was hit.

Denny Boyles with PG&E said that it was a third-party dig-in who struck the gas line. The gas line was hit in the back of a home when it was hit.

Boyles said the crew was able to turn off the gas to the line at about 2:45 p.m.

The line was a 3/4" steel line and the dig-in response team will investigate the incident to determine why the line was hit.

There was a call placed to 811 and the services on the property were marked prior to the start of work.
