The Bakersfield Police Department is investigating the death of a 4-month-old they say could be the result of negligence by the child's mother.

Documents obtained by 23ABC show the Bakersfield Police Department responded to a home in Northeast Bakersfield after a mother called saying she discovered her baby wasn't breathing.

The mother of the 4-month-old told police she left her baby, along with a two-year-old and a four-year-old to sleep on an air mattress. The mother slept in a different room. In the morning, she discovered the baby covered in bedding and was cold to the touch and not breathing. 

The reporting police officer stated they believe there could be evidence gathered to show the mother's general negligence could be construed as a criminal act.
