The Kern County Sheriff's bomb squad detonated a device found in the backyard of a home in the 15000 block of Azalea Spring Court around 8:15 p.m. Thursday evening.
A Sheriff's spokespersons tells 23ABC a resident was digging a trench in their backyard, when their excavator hit the device. They reportedly handled the device, noticing it said "TNT" on it, and that's when they called the Sheriff's office.
The Sheriff's bomb squad was called to the scene, and they detonated the device in a near by field. That explosion prompted several 23ABC viewers to contact us.
@23ABCNews We also heard the loud boom in NW Bakersfield. My sister, who's 3 miles from us heard it, too.

One viewer told us the explosion "rattled their windows, and set off car alarms." Some viewers as far as NW Bakersfield said they heard the loud sound.
@23ABCNews We just heard and felt a large boom in the NW area near Rosedale. Has there been any reports of what it could have been?
