The forest fire awareness mascot Smokey Bear turned 72 on Tuesday.

The mascot was created in 1944 with the first slogan “Care will prevent 9 out of 10 forest fires”.

His most famous message “Remember only you can prevent forest fires” was created three years later.

Smokey’s name and image are protected by U.S. federal law under the Smokey Bear Act of 1952.
